While gathering our data through our interviews, we discovered many similarities and formed categories based on the topics discussed. We shaped our questions to learn more about their experiences and knowledge of obesity. From that, we learned a plethora of information about people's self-control, education, time management, illness'/diseases', affordability, and environmental issues. Through this process, we could see what findings stood out and relate that to our problem statement.
Through our interviews, we have learned more about our demographic and how they have tackled their overall health and fitness journeys so far. They provided insight on their respective issues and struggles and what keeps them from hitting their goals. One example of an interviewee’s user need is that they lack the resources to achieve weight loss. These needs can also be seen as points of strife in which these individuals struggle to obtain. In a general sense, some people are unable to have any self control. They consume an excessive amount of food while they’re under stress, they want to lose weight but don’t know how to, and some don’t have the drive to get up and make a change in their lifestyle. Furthermore, there is a population that simply does not have the time. As a result of their hectic lifestyles, they can allocate time to exercise or cook nutritious meals. Additionally, there is also the financial aspect that needs to be considered. Some people do not have enough money in their budgets to afford expensive gym memberships or proper nutrition. Higher quality ingredients can cost up to ten to twenty percent more than their unhealthy counterparts. The main gap for these individuals would be to find a way to get rid of all, or at least one, of these limiting factors. Obesity can hinder the way people go about their lives and they never get the chance to address it.
To embellish our interview process, we learned many of our interviewees dealt with fitness and nutrition problems, but there were crucial differences in how they dealt with these situations. For example, we had multiple interviewees bring up the topic of not having enough time, and thus, this resulted in them not being able to work out enough or at all. However, one interviewee, a media logistics specialist, still makes time to work six out of the seven days a week, although they work five times a week. This was an excellent finding for our research because we had specific categorizations, as we discussed earlier, and we were able to categorize these results into them. In addition, we noted the frequency of the overlap of keywords or phrases and added weight to them in our Axial Coding diagrams.
These discoveries can help us guide our research further and point us in the direction that will be mostly beneficial to our target audience. Referring back to our points of strife, one example of that is a lack of motivation and willpower. We could utilize that information and start a new research effort to learn what are the best solutions to solve it. Perhaps it could be finding a way to motivate people extrinsically or remind them of their intrinsic goals. Further research can help eliminate insignificant data and emphasize potential and practical solutions.
